Shutter Question

I went out for the first time today since before my accident to shoot a local waterfall... and I got nothing. For some reason every time I tried to slow the shutter... it wouldn't work. I even resorted to pulling out the old trusty camera and it took the shot like I wanted. So I got to thinking that there might be something wrong with my D200... would there be a reason why mechanically the shutter would not function correctly or is it basically user error? Also, I shot the D100 with the settings, and when I put the D200 on the same settings it didn't work as the D100. Would this be right or should it be just about the same? Hubby and I both think its probably just user error, especially since I haven't really shot or did any photo work since summer when I had my accident...

Any help would be great.
Thanks
